Participants learn to ride under the guidance of a certified therapeutic riding instructor. Activities include exercises, games, and tasks tailored to the individual's age, needs, and abilities to promote physical, cognitive, and emotional development. In addition to riding, participants may engage in grooming, feeding, and leading horses, which helps build trust, responsibility, and empathy.

Our therapeutic riding program is led by CanTRA (Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association) certified instructors. Shining Horizons is also a member of Equine Canada and PATH International, the U.S. counterpart of CanTRA. Our Program Director, Paula Bernard, is the only certified CanTRA Examiner east of Montreal and a board member of CanTRA Canada.

Who are our riders?

Therapeutic horseback riding is a powerful tool for promoting physical, emotional, and social well-being. It offers invaluable support for individuals with diverse needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities.

The rhythmic movement of riding helps improve balance, coordination, and motor skills, while also calming the mind and reducing stress. This unique form of therapy fosters greater social interaction and emotional resilience, empowering individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. With each ride, participants experience a greater sense of independence and connection to their own potential."

Program details

Safety first...

Ensuring the safety of participants and horses is paramount at Shining Horizons. We provide appropriate safety gear, such as helmets, and strictly follow CanTRA safety guidelines to maintain a secure environment.

To help participants get accustomed to the feel and movements of a horse, all individuals in our riding program begin their training on our Racewood Simulator. This allows them to gain confidence and experience in a controlled setting. Once they are ready and comfortable, they can safely transition to riding a real horse.
